MARPOL 73/78 is the international convention for the prevention of pollution from ships. Its stated objective is “to preserve the marine environment through the complete elimination of pollution by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances at sea”. As one of life’s major sustainers the marine environment requires that steps are put in place to protect it.

The International Maritime Organization IMO - is the United Nations specialized agency with the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. The IMO's work supports the UN sustainable development goals.
